On the same day that the Justice Department softened its position in a gay-marriage lawsuit, word is emerging that the department has hired a liaison to the gay community.
Matt Nosanchuk, a former adviser to Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), will join the department as a senior counselor to the assistant attorney general for civil rights, according to an e-mail University of Pennsylvania Professor Tobias Wolff sent to associates Monday night. Wolff was a top LGBT adviser on the Obama campaign. In the e-mail, obtained by POLITICO, Wolff said Nosanchuk “will be the front office point person on LGBT issues for the DOJ Civil Rights Division” among other duties.
A Justice Department spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the reported hire.
Yellow-highlights are mine – because the attempt is pathetically obvious. That “controversial brief” filed by Obama’s DOJ compared gay-relationships to incest with uncles sleeping with nephews and other disgusting perversions.
I’m still offended. Mr. Nosanchuk’s service to Mr. Obama is a patronizing puppet show. Typical for a Democrat to whip out a dummy in order to perform a thesis for a Ph.D. in Vantriloquism.
Blurring the lines between racism and sexual orientation is a chemistry set. Obama is simply clueless on what to do with his bunson burners.
Bite me, Barack! You hate us – we get it. We were dumb.
Julian Bond of the NAACP supports the GLBT community better than setting up a skinny-white guy to represent us. Thanks for the patsy, Dude-in-Chief. I’m totally convinced that Mr. Nosanchuk will play any role in your adminstration beyond yuk-yuk-jokes, Uranus-laffs and Faggot-gaffs.
Software mogul and philanthropist Bruce Bastian is the latest donor to pull out of an LGBT Democratic Party fund-raiser following last week’s brief from the Department of Justice upholding the Defense of Marriage Act as law, as directed by President Barack Obama. Bastian — who donated $1 million to the campaign against Prop. 8 – sent a message to the Democratic Party leadership saying that he will no longer donate to the party as a whole, according to the Washington Blade. “I will continue to support certain congressmen, congresswomen, and senators whom I believe will continue to fight for our rights, but I don’t think blanket donations to the Democratic Party right now are justified, at least not in my book,” he told the Washington Blade.
Mr. Bastian is the author of popular WordPerfect, an extremely popular word processing software in the 1990′s. Last year, Mr. Bastian dropped a cool $1 million into HRC to fight Prop 8 in California. Mr. Bastian is a member of the LDS Church – the same organization that tore down Prop 8 in California. The LDS church killed Prop 8 in a buy-one get-one free… They gambled that California would buckle and got the added cherry on their Sundae by watching Bruce Bastian stop funding the Democratic Party.
Attracting the attention of that half of the bloggosphere who’d rather read other people’s blogs than maintain one of their own, requires a little bit of skill. Flies to sugar-water, bees to honey, if you will. Step one is to come up with a decent-sounding title for the blog-entry by duping the Blog-Reader to actually pay attention to what you have to say.
Confused? You might say:
“Fruit! Oh Snap, Girlfriend!! …What the Hell are you talking about?!”
…And I would have to point to those Communists over at Red State who’s titled a blog entry with this piece:
Sounds ominous, no?! It’s like: “Uh oh… Who jumped “Team Obama”?!” …and you’re thinking the worst!
Phhh…. Sucker! We’re talking about Redstate, silly! These are “con-servatives”! These people have nothing left but hope (that they can get you to believe their bullshit)!
Boy, how long has it been since I’ve been able to report good news on an election night for Republicans? With results from 26 out of 26 precincts, and absentees included, Republican Frank Fannon and GOP-endorsed independent Alicia Hughes appear to have won seats on the Alexandria City Council. The Democrats will still control a majority of four out of six seats, but this is a couple rippes of red in a deep blue community in a purple state – the best news for local Republicans in a long time.
Wow! Really? This is the **BEST** news for local Republicans in a long time?!
The GOP has won two seats on the city council of Alexandria, Virginia and this is the best news for the Republican party in a long time? This equals a blog title that says:
Moe Lane, author of the Redstate blog entry “hits a home-run and wins the pie-eating contest at the county fair” with the follow-up:
But the implications are bigger. Barack Obama won this county 72-27. Senator Mark Warner is from Alexandria. Democratic National Committee Chair Tim Kaine is the Governor of Virginia.
Barack Obama lost today. The Democratic National Committee lost today.
Oh snap! Color me fuschia and watch me quiva..!
Did they “lose” a 25-year well established US Senator from Pennsylvania today?! Did they “lose” another major set-back in a run-off race in Minnesota?
Is the NCNA listening? Obama is vulnerable now! Let’s
lead NOW from a position of strength rather than go searching for what we stand for on a wussie tour
The NCNA he references is the brand-new organization old-GOP goats have tried to cobble together and effort to re-brand the GOP into something coherent to the American public. Mike “Gamecock” DeVine is pulling for the “National Council for a New America“; a group of Republican clowns that met just last weekend at a pizza joint in Arlington, Virginia.
It’s a train-wreck of a political party. When I was a child, I was responsible for weeding the garden. Pulling weeds from between the carrots, potatoes, the corn and the strawberry plants was my responsibility. Each subsequent summer season, I felt more and more sympathy for the invading weeds:
They’re just struggling along with the rest of us… Now where is my PB and J Sandwich?!
But that was when I was a child
It’s sad watching a national political party die, seriously. They had their fame – their glory. They had their “Big Hey Day!”. It’s bittersweet watching them fall-off their bicycles without their helmets. For sixteen-odd years, this is the same political party was thrilled to jump in my face to remind me that their God, and Lord Jesus Christ hated me because I’m gay. I didn’t support that Iraq War and they claimed that I was being “un-patriotic”. I didn’t support Bush’s policies towards torture and I was “un-American”.
Today, it’s like having a shoe in your left hand and a can of Raid in your right and taking the time out seconds before you decide the demise of the ominous arachnid crawling on the cement block-wall of your unfinished basement…. The spider stops just for a moment, hiding behind a broom handle and the vaccuum cleaner – and you simply can’t decide how the insect’s life should end:
Shoe? Raid? They’re just strugglign along with the rest of us… Chemicals or squish?!?
[WHACK!!]
Now where’s my PB and J Sandwich?!
Hey! This is easy..! I just need to work on my blog titles and I could be more popular than Redstate!!
There’s no justice in the world anymore, ya know?!? No justice!! Who’s going to sit around the water-cooler and talk about McCain’s conversation from a year ago while on his dumpy broken-down McStraight Talking McBus discussing what he thinks about campaigns running negative ads?!
Nobody, that’s who!
Here’s Sara Palin doing the keynote to the Alaska Independence Party convention: Not only is she missing a Flag Pin on her lapel, she refuses to acknowledge the United States Constitution while focusing on the (country of) Alaska constitution as her topic du jour!
BORING!!
C’mone DNC-Geeks! Bring us fresh meat!! Live meat if possible!!Can we have another Dick Cheney (fake) heart attack!?!? Please?!?!?
The McCain campaign is handing out gaffes like Halloween candy for chrissakes. I’m willing to bet that John McCain is nothing more than a Democratic trojan-horse whose forced the political arm of the GOP.
Hello!! Is anybody paying attention to how “BADLY” this GOP campaign is running?!?! I feel like a member of the Peace Corps: Who will save the GOP?!!!
This is Gay Pride Week. I’ve been so busy this week with GPW activities I could just scream. My husband partner is no exception; he’s complaining about his Gay Recruiting class size. This year, he has well over fifty heterosexual men who’ve decided they want to be gay, and he’s just swamped. And then there’s the night-classes for the Catholic priests he’s teaching too. Every night he has over 100 Catholic priests that he has to teach on “The Art of Seducing Alter Boys”. That Catholic church has really ramped up their battle against us, so even enticing those alter boys can be rather dicey.
It was just a week or so ago, there was a dust-up over at the John McCain campaign on the subject of Campaign Financing. McCain, according to the DNC is illegally flip-flopping on the subject by accepting those funds and then spending more than is allowed by law.
In order to receive matching funds, John McCain signed a binding agreement with the FEC to accept spending limits and to abide by the conditions of receiving those funds. The FEC requires that any request to withdraw from the agreement must be granted by the FEC. FEC Chairman David Mason made this clear in a letter to McCain advising him that the law requires the FEC to approve his request to withdraw from his contract – a move McCain ignored and cost Mason his job.
According to past Commission rulings, the McCain campaign would not be allowed to withdraw from matching funds because it already violated a key condition for being let out of the program – pledging matching funds as collateral for a private loan.
Obama — at a time when Hillary Clinton was the inevitable juggernaut rolling back to the White House — said he would stay in the federal public financing system if he did win the primary fight, as long as his GOP opponent did the same. McCain agreed immediately. The system gives candidates $85 million, funded by the $3 check-off fewer and fewer taxpayers choose to pay on IRS forms. But that’s the only money candidates who take the funding can spend after the nominating conventions. They can’t use campaign contributions from private donors. Now, awash in private contributions, Obama and his strategists are beginning to back away from his pledge to rely solely on public money.
So, McCain agrees: “We’ll take the public tax payer’s money and stay within the $85 Million as prescribed by law.”
[Handshake] …and “Deal”.
Now Obama doesn’t need the funds – so “screw ‘em” he says. “I can raise my own money and not limit myself to the $80-odd Million the FEC mandates.”
McCain isn’t out of the woods:
McCain, meanwhile, took out a loan last fall that saved his campaign, giving him the money he needed for a last-ditch effort to win New Hampshire. He also declared himself eligible for a different public-financing program that gives candidates matching funds, keyed to the level of their private fundraising, for primary campaigns — and imposes strict spending caps in the process. Now that his financial picture has improved, he’s announced he won’t take the primary matching funds. But the head of the Federal Election Commission (a longtime critic of McCain’s campaign finance reforms) said last week that McCain may still be locked into taking the matching funds anyway.
Ooops.
But hold the phone here… Does anybody smell the rotting fish in this story?
His (Obama’s) decision makes him the first major-party candidate to opt out of the public structure for the general election campaign since it was created after the Watergate scandal more than 30 years ago. Republican John McCain, after initially saying he would consider opting out as well, said this evening he would taketaxpayer financing for his campaign.
Does that help?
The hypocrisies of the GOP is far too often ignored. Take your average John Q. Dolt who proudly hails himself as a Republican and talk about the poor on the welfare system in this country. You’ll get a thirty minute lecture on the laziness of these welfare recipients. And you’ll get an extra thirty minute lecture on the black woman’s status as “welfare queens” who are producing babies just to draw bigger welfare checks.
Where was James Cayne, Pesident and CEO of Bear Stearns, during the week before that company collapsed? Cayne is a champion bridge player. On the week while his giant-sized company was on the verge of collapse; Cayne was at a Bridge Tournament in Detroit.
Paulson also sought to send a calming message that the administration of President George W. Bush is on top of the turbulent situation. “The government is prepared to do what it takes” to ease turmoil in the financial system and minimize any damage to the U.S. economy, Paulson said during a series of broadcast interviews. The Fed’s intervention “was not a difficult decision. It was the right decision.“
It was the “right decision”.
Corporate welfare is rampant, and the Republicans put up a presidential nominee who’s sucking on the government’s teat and yet they won’t stop bitching about Barack Obama who does – exactly what a Republican preaches: He’ll raise his own funds, thank you very much!
Now let me get back to my responsibilities over at Gay Pride. I have some new recruits that I need to gather up from behind the roadside rests and the public toilets at the Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport. The Lesbian Liberation Army has promised my a special word on my behalf to the Supreme Bitch. I’m all excited and wonder how we’ll be rewarded for all of our hard work.
Congressman Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin have announced the formation of the newly formed Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“The mission of the LGBT Equality Caucus is to achieve the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence and the improved health and well being for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.”
So, I’m guessing you’re curious: “Gee Fruit!! What’s up with that?!?”
I’m glad you asked! And here’s the list of the 52 members of the GLBT Caucus:
Rob Andrews (D-NJ), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Lois Capps (D-CA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Diana DeGette (D-CO), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Barney Frank (D-MA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Mike Honda (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), James McGovern (D-MA), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Linda Sánchez (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Hilda Solis (D-CA), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Peter Welch (D-VT), Howard Berman (D-CA), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Robert Brady (D-PA), Michael Capuano (D-MA), Susan Davis (D-CA), Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Phil Hare (D-IL), Rush Holt (D-NJ), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Doris Matsui (D-CA), James Moran (D-VA), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-Washington, D.C.), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Steven Rothman (D-NJ), José Serrano (D-NY), Chris Shays (R-CT), Pete Stark (D-CA), Betty Sutton (D-OH), Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), Niki Tsongas (D-MA), Robert Wexler (D-FL), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).
Gotta love my buddy Keith!!! I’m so proud of him, I could just pee in my bloomers!! Err…Maybe; I’m so proud of him, I could bake chocolate chip cookies all day!! Hrm.. Ummm…hrmm!! Ummm…. “I’m so proud of him, I could just scream!” No…no no no… Umm… Lessee, ummm… “I’m so proud of my Congressman Keith Ellison, I could write a blog about it and tell everybody how proud I am!!”
Much better!! Don’t you think?!?
Pride Source notes a little bit more information on the subject:
Baldwin described the purpose of the caucus as both symbolic and substantive. “…symbolic because, historically, of all the member caucuses organized in the Congress over the years, none has ever been dedicated to equality for LGBT Americans,” he said. “The very existence of an LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress makes a strong statement about the values this Congress and this nation hold dear.”
The Chairs are, of course, Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), but the Vice Chairs are:
Reps. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), Xavier Becerra (D-CA) Lois Capps (D-CA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Diana DeGette (D-CO), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Mike Honda (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), James McGovern (D-MA), Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Hilda Solis (D-CA), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Peter Welch (D-VT)
Oh for pity’s sakes… That just makes me wanna cry!!!
I’m guessing that she’s pissed because Hillary ran such a shitty campaign. But that would only be a guess.
I wonder if they make spell-checkers for poster-board signs?
Pastor in Houma, LA, smears Clinton about racism; Obama is expected to apologize again.
Fr. Jones, Bemidji, MN: “Hillary must leave now”; Wolfson demands Obama apologize for cruel slurs.
Rabbi Cohen, Cleveland, MS: “Clinton has lied for the last time”; Clinton supporters get the vapors – demands an Obama Apology
Have I got your attention? Good!
Point #1: Expecting Obama to come to Hillary Clinton’s rescue with an apology every time some asshole says something bad about her is ridiculous; to say the least. Father Pfleger’s outburst is what it is, nothing more. Hillary Clinton got slapped by a Catholic priest and so she and all of her supporters once again beat their war drums enjoying their time watching Obama come back with his hat in his hands and offering an apology. Odd, don’t you think; his apology is never enough? Never! Hillary supporters gleefully wallowing in the apology, criticizing him because
it wasn’t sincere enough,
didn’t seem to include the correct wording that they were expecting demanding, or
it wasn’t fast enough (because when Hillary fans get pissed off, you’d better be “front and center” within seconds dammit!!)
Obama could come crawling, bare-chested over a bed of razor-blades, and then over a bed of hot coals, get salt water thrown on him and offer his most sincere and deepest apology – and Hillary and her supporters would cheer in delight and then kick him in the crotch and tell him that it still wasn’t good enough.
Why?
Because it will never be good enough. It’s their chance to bask in the sun demanding that everybody recognize their hatred for
Obama
his supporters, and
the party.
It isn’t about the Democratic Party: It’s about them and they’ll do anything to make sure they keep it that way.
Could someone please spell it out for me: “Why is Obama expected to apologize for every Tom, Dick and Harry who says something bad about Hillary anyway?” But he is!
So let’s all watch for our fake “Fr. Jones” and “Rabbi Cohen” to show up and we’ll all be back here, watching Hillary Fans be all pissed off again. Hillary herself will be back demanding yet another apology from Obama.
…And everybody else? We’ll be shaking our heads in embarrassment.
Point #2: Fr Pfleger is just another Bible-thumper who’s found an audience by Hillary bashing. He’ll be on the television circuit, making tons of money, and he’ll probably be out with a freaking book before the elections in November. And why not? He’s selling copy!
I looked forward to Kitty Kelley’s unauthorized biography on Nancy Reagan I read it, I was more than disappointed. But, she made a few cool million off that piece of trash. And as long as that Liberal Main Stream Media keeps hyperventilating this stuff, Fr Pfleger would be wise to cash in on it too!
Pfleger has found, or will be soon finding out, that slamming Hillary attracts attention. And when you can attract attention by being so over-the-top, there’s opportunity to make money out of the dramatic moment.
You think you’re pissed off about Pfleger’s comment now? You just buckle-up, Baby…There’s a lot more of them that’ll be looking to..$$ cash-in.
Write your own book slamming Hillary. If your manuscript is good enough, you’ll make the $$ too!
Point #3: Hillary Supporters have patronized the Obama Supporters every time Senator Clinton kicked him in the teeth since February. “Oh, Boo-Hoo…If he can’t take the heat from Hillary, how’s he going to take the heat from the GOP?!” Or we heard them say; “Oh well! It just goes to show you that Obama doesn’t have the meddle to be President!”
And the subject has just been turned on its head with Fr Pfleger’s sermon last week.
What does Hillary care what some crack-pot priest on Chicago have to say?
Why, Hillary has started out in this race to play fierce and hard; what’s gone wrong? What’s changed?
I thought she was supposed running for the office of Commander in Chief?! What the hell?
Some priest out of Chicago get a little lippy and she’s pissed off?! Christ Almighty: What’s up next with Hillary? Is she going to go on a tare and throw every religious leader in jail for speaking ill of “The Goddess”?!?!
Are we all given a gag-order? Or is the gag-order only applicable to the Clergy?
Point #4: I’m going to repeat the first paragraph of Spin #3 and you’ll see why:
Hillary Supporters have patronized the Obama Supporters every time Senator Clinton kicked him in the teeth since February. “Oh, Boo-Hoo…If he can’t take the heat from Hillary, how’s he going to take the heat from the GOP?!” Or we heard them say; “Oh well! It just goes to show you that Obama doesn’t have the meddle to be President!”
So now Hillary and her own Faithful Flock have gotten a taste of their own medicine… Well, that’s a shame, don’t you think?
With the feces she’s thrown at Obama, could she be so naive to forget: “What comes around, goes around”?
What needs to happen for Hillary and her Faithful Flock wake-up and smell the coffee? The majority of the Democrats in this country has spoken: “We want Obama!”
He’s won more Super D’s.
He’s won more states.
He’s won more committed delegates!
And yet, Hillary and her Fans, continue this level of arrogance by continuing to re-write the metric. “The issue in Florida is like the voting in Zimbabwe!” and other such lunatic bullshit comes out of Team Hillary. All the while she’s spewing such lunacy, her followers sit back and demand, with an iron-fist, that we allow them to continue playing in our sandbox. We continue to let them drain valued donated money and time against McBush.
But as I’ve already said earlier: This isn’t about Presidential campaigns, it’s about them. Who gives a shit what the majority in the party wants? It won’t go away, will it?
It slogs on and on and on….
Only now, those from deep within the Obama Camp are starting to shout out. They’re starting to yell back at the minority within the camp. There are those who are frustrated with this game and they’re starting to kick back.
…But it doesn’t go away. It slogs on.
Like the buzzing sounds of the extremely annoying mosquitoes, Hillary Fans whine because Hillary’s caught a proverbial black-eye from “someone in the audience”. Big deal. Buck up.
To use a masculine term: “Grow a pair!!!”
Expect to hear more, the longer she continues this race.
Point #5 Father Pfleger’s message, his sermon, was about “Entitlements”. If anybody bothered to go beyond that 30-second sound-bit that “Libral” Mainstream Media keeps playing over and over again, you’d see the wider context of what he was preaching about. And, he was preaching on the horrors that white people have done to people of color. His point rings of a European-American history related not only the horrors of slavery, but that would include the Spaniards’ actions to the Aztecs, the Caribbean natives who are now extinct, as well as the North and South American native peoples.
Fr Pfleger was noting that in today’s world; white people, generally, sit back and they expect entitlements bestowed upon them while everybody else who lives in this hemisphere have suffered at the hands of those European ancestors. …And, by in large, he’s pretty well nailed it! For the life of me, I can not find a printed copy of his sermon. However, I found a 7-odd minute on YouTube of the sermon that will bring a little bit more clarity to the context of his sermon:
… While he’s in front of Rev Jeremiah Wright’s church, Senator Barack Obama’s church, he’s chosen to take a swipe at Hillary Clinton and her own sense of entitlement. He’s chose her to make his point valid. That’s all! But, I’ll happily point back at Father Pfleger and note that the Catholic Church has been guilty of the more heinous crimes against all humanity. What the Catholic Church has done to gays and lesbians, women, minorities, the mentally ill, from dyslexia to epilepsy, those born disfigured and to those who dared to worship God differently, Father Pfleger has very little room to bitch on this topic.
Hell, during the Witchcraft Trials, a mole on the skin was considered where “the Devil kissed you” and you could be put to death. And while Fr Pfleger may make an interesting point, as a European-American himself, he paints himself as a wee-bit of a hypocrite on the subject.
In fact; the very words “fag” and “faggot” as related to gay men, are words coined directly from the very same Catholic Church Fr Pfleger represents.
Why he’s bitching about white people, I don’t know.
Nor do I know, nor care, why Hillary Fans are so pissed off.
To use a sexist term: “If she can’t take the heat, then get the hell out of the kitchen.”
Who’s the next “Fr Jones” that’s going to be smearing Hillary? Will there ever be a Rabbi Cohen or another Fr Jones out there smearing Hillary Clinton because of some new issue!?
Perhaps the bigger question should be; Why should we care?!
When the Clinton campaign plane took off from Texas this afternoon, one person was missing: Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Where was she?
Mrs. Clinton hopped another plane bound for New York will she will appear later tonight on Saturday night Live, much the way Senator Barack Obama of Illinois did last year. It’s a surprise walk-on, and comes as Mrs. Clinton is finding new places to take her campaign appeal (She is appearing on Comedy Central last week).
But they always leave the best part in the last paragraph:
In what is perhaps not the greatest bit of show business timing, Mrs. Clinton will be sharing the Saturday Night Live bill with Wilco, the popular alt-country Chicago band which has become one of the biggest boosters of – you guessed it, Mr. Obama. (The Obama stickers could be spotted on the band’s gear when it showed up for a two-night stand at 9:30, the Washington music club this week.)
How easy can I find a picture of Barack Obama hugging a Wilco band member?
phphphphphph….
“Jesus Christ our president…” Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy sang in a Woody Guthrie song written before Obama’s candidacy.
But from the enhusiastic cheering for the man Tweedy introduced as “the next president of the United States,” it might have seemed like it was written for Obama.
You shouldn’t believe everything a politician tells you. As with attorneys and meteorologists, politicians are paid to be professional liars. When Bill Clinton was running for President in 1991, he promised to over-haul the credit system and make it a little more accurate and harder to invade from outsiders. He never lifted a finger. The entire credit card system is a disaster to this day and banks are still using it to make decisions on loaning money to their customers.
In last week’s debate between Clinton and Obama, the subject was brought up on their views about NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement. Both of the Senators agreed that NAFTA would be either renegotiated or at least “reviewed”. According to the original transcripts, Clinton said:
You know, I have been a critic of NAFTA from the very beginning. I didn’t have a public position on it, because I was part of the administration, but when I started running for the Senate, I have been a critic. I’ve said it was flawed. I said that it worked in some parts of our country, and I’ve seen the results in Texas. I was in Laredo in the last couple of days. It’s the largest inland port in America now. So clearly, some parts of our country have been benefited.
So what I have said is that we need to have a plan to fix NAFTA. I would immediately have a trade timeout, and I would take that time to try to fix NAFTA by making it clear that we’ll have core labor and environmental standards in the agreement.
Her final thoughts on NAFTA were…
So I would hope that, again, we can get to a debate about what the real issues are and where we stand because we do need to fix NAFTA. It is not working. It was, unfortunately, heavily disadvantaging many of our industries, particularly manufacturing.
Obama stepped into the conversation, first by disagreeing with Senator Clinton’s claim she’s “always been against” NAFTA, but did offer his thoughts on the subject:
I have to say, Tim, with respect to my position on this, when I ran for the United States Senate, the Chicago Tribune, which was adamantly pro-NAFTA, noted that, in their endorsement of me, they were endorsing me despite my strong opposition to NAFTA.
And that conversation that I had with the Farm Bureau, I was not ambivalent at all. What I said was that NAFTA and other trade deals can be beneficial to the United States because I believe every U.S. worker is as productive as any worker around the world, and we can compete with anybody. And we can’t shy away from globalization. We can’t draw a moat around us. But what I did say, in that same quote, if you look at it, was that the problem is we’ve been negotiating just looking at corporate profits and what’s good for multinationals, and we haven’t been looking at what’s good for communities here in Ohio, in my home state of Illinois, and across the country.
And as president, what I want to be is an advocate on behalf of workers. Look, you know, when I go to these plants, I meet people who are proud of their jobs. They are proud of the products that they’ve created. They have built brands and profits for their companies. And when they see jobs shipped overseas and suddenly they are left not just without a job, but without health care, without a pension, and are having to look for seven-buck-an-hour jobs at the local fast-food joint, that is devastating on them, but it’s also devastating on the community. That’s not the way that we’re going to prosper as we move forward.
Sounds like we’re all in agreement with how both of our Presidential Candidates feel about NAFTA?
Apparently, the camp counselors from both Clinton’s and Obama’s KOA have already been dialing up the Canadians and telling their Prime Minister that they were just “joking”. You know…”kidding”! …Just “joshing around”. Says the Canadian-based CTV.com:
Barack Obama has ratcheted up his attacks on NAFTA, but a senior member of his campaign team told a Canadian official not to take his criticisms seriously, CTV News has learned.
Both Obama and Hillary Clinton have been critical of the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement over the course of the Democratic primaries, saying that the deal has cost U.S. workers’ jobs.
Within the last month, a top staff member for Obama’s campaign telephoned Michael Wilson, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, and warned him that Obama would speak out against NAFTA, according to Canadian sources.
The staff member reassured Wilson that the criticisms would only be campaign rhetoric, and should not be taken at face value.
But Tuesday night in Ohio, where NAFTA is blamed for massive job losses, Obama said he would tell Canada and Mexico “that we will opt out unless we renegotiate the core labor and environmental standards.”
Late Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Obama campaign said the staff member’s warning to Wilson sounded implausible, but did not deny that contact had been made.
The Clinton KOA has been peeing in the same swimming hole on the topic too:
“Senator Obama does not make promises he doesn’t intend to keep,” the spokesperson said.
Low-level sources also suggested the Clinton campaign may have given a similar warning to Ottawa, but a Clinton spokesperson flatly denied the claim.
During Tuesday’s debate, she said that as president she would opt out of NAFTA “unless we renegotiate it.”
On the subject of NAFTA; it appears that the only politician that wasn’t lying about the damages it would do to those of us in the United States was Ross Perot. Perot told all of us to “listen for the giant-sucking sound of jobs headed over the border to Mexico should NAFTA be ratified.”
During a debate in Ohio this week, where NAFTA is blamed for job losses, both Obama and Clinton said that as president, they would opt out of the trade deal unless it could be renegotiated.
When asked about the CTV report, Obama’s said today, “It wasn’t true.”
Today Bill Burton of the Obama campaign told ABC News no senior Obama campaign representative called the Canadian embassy. “The news reports on Obama’s position on NAFTA are inaccurate and in no way represent Senator Obama’s consistent position on trade,” Burton said separately in an email.
“When Senator Obama says that he will forcefully act to make NAFTA a better deal for American workers, he means it. Both Canada and Mexico should know that, as president, Barack Obama will do what it takes to create and protect American jobs and strengthen the American economy — that includes amending NAFTA to include labor and environmental standards. We are currently reaching out to the Canadian embassy to correct this inaccuracy.”
This afternoon the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C., sent out a press release to deny the CTV report.
“The Canadian Embassy confirms that at no time has any member of a Presidential campaign called the Canadian Ambassador or any official at the Embassy to discuss NAFTA,” the statement read. “Last night the Canadian television network CTV, falsely reported that such calls had been made. That story is untrue. Neither before nor since the Ohio debate has any presidential campaign called Ambassador Wilson or the Embassy to raise NAFTA.”
The Canadian embassy is pro actively reaching out to the campaigns “all the time,” Norton said, to try to meet with aides who might form the foreign and economic policy teams of any future administration.
“We talk about the whole range of Canada-U.S. issues which we think it’s critically important that the presidential candidates be aware of including the number of jobs that depend in the United States on Canada-U.S. trade.”
The Canadian Embassy says there are more than seven million jobs in the U.S. that depend on trade with Canada.
“We discuss our view that NAFTA has been very good for all three participating countries and has made the continent more competitive in the face of China, India, Brazil,” Norton said.
Dammit. This is what happens when your read that trash Republican “Daily-Kos” wanna-be website. I read this story originally here and here. Redstate is now pushing out the conspiracy theory that the Canadian government doesn’t want to be seen as an agency involved with US politics. Redstate is pushing this YouTube from this link:
On Blogs4McCain, a blog-site where Nursing Home patients learn how to use a computer mouse and “Monitor” can sometimes mean a “tee-vee” screen, they’re publishing something completely out of touch with the Obama/NAFTA story with this (piece of crap).
I knew I should have stayed in bed this morning. It’s what I get for reading Redstate without wearing my radiation suit and UV goggles on…
If gay people were in charge of FEMA; all of those people in New Orleans would not only have bottled water, but they'd also have sun-screen and ponchos in three different colors!
