Republicanville: Tent cities springing up everywhere

Coming to a town near you!

Copying the days of the Great Depression of the 1930’s, tent cities (a.k.a. “Hooverviles” have begun to spring up everywhere in the United States.

Today, tent cities are popping up everywhere, and I’m going to insist that we call them Republicanvilles.  In Reno, NV:080918-tent-cities-bcol1pstandard

“…more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a “tent city” — an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.

Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they’ve experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report’s release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

Other cities have reported ten cities (a.k.a. “Republicanvilles”) have sprung up in Chattanooga, TN, San Diego, CA and Columbus, OH.

In Seattle, which is experiencing a building boom and an influx of affluent professionals in neighborhoods the working class once owned, homeless encampments have been springing up — in remote places to avoid police sweeps.

“What’s happening in Seattle is what’s happening everywhere else — on steroids,” said Tim Harris, executive director of Real Change, an advocacy organization that publishes a weekly newspaper sold by homeless people.

Photoblogs from the San Francisco Gate on the growing population of Repbulicanvilles can been seen by clicking here.

Meanwhile, Robert B. Zoellick, president of the World Bank, sounds an awful lot like our own President Barack Obama who said after announcing a massive shrinkage in a global economy and global trade:

“This global crisis needs a global solution and preventing an economic catastrophe in developing countries is important for global efforts to overcome this crisis,” Mr. Zoellick said in a statement. “We need investments in safety nets, infrastructure, and small and medium-size companies to create jobs and to avoid social and political unrest.”

The World Bank said:

The World Bank said in a new report that the crisis that began with junk mortgages in the United States was causing havoc for poorer countries that had nothing to do with the original problem.

Those junk mortgages came from the Republican Party and the Bush Administration with the the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which:

…broke down barriers between banks, securities firms, mortgage lenders and insurance companies. That deregulation repealed Great Depression-era bank regulations with the approval of former president Bill Clinton.

Even though the Act has Republican names on it, and the President was being impeached at the time, the Republican Party will swear it was Clinton’s fault. It was former US Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX) who was the chief architect of that bill that has shoved Ms. Tammy Day into homelessness just four days ago in Sacramento, CA.

In other exciting news, Paris Hilton goes “clubbing” with Ellen Degeneres, RNC Chair Michael Steele has taken down his new “hip-hop” blog (because the Republican de factor leader told him to take it down because there were too many PDF files linked in it and there wasn’t enough child-porn) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) admits to being a whopper of a Welfare Queen when it comes to spending for his state, but hates everybody else’s earmarks (and John McCain hates Lindsey Graham’s SC earmarks). The New York Times is reporting over 600,000 jobs were lost in February, John McCain (R-AZ) and Richard Shelby (R-AL) are delighted to watch mega-banks fail and think it would be good for all of us to “learn our lesson”, and Charles Krauthammer (R-Shill) continues to get paid for being able to pout and whine better than anybody else.

FruitFly 6Oh!  And I almost forgot the most important news of the day!  Matt Damon and his sexy Spandex.  I’ll assume by those photos that Matt was definitely born a male child.  So when a Republicanville shows up on the outskirts of your town, be sure to act like a true Republican and remind them that it was their fault they’re living underneath a nylon roof.

Gay and Lesbian Mardis Gras (Sydney, AU) begins in hours

front_grasThe GLBT Mardis Gras is about to begin in Sydney, kicking off a whopper of a national party. From the Sydney Morning Harald:

Parade organisers expect 300,000 people to line the streets to watch 135 floats cruise past and 10,000 performers stroll, dance and celebrate, giving it their all as they parade along the route from the CBD to Moore Park on Saturday night.

This year’s theme, Nations United, is a tribute to homosexuals around the world who may not enjoy the freedoms and freedom of expression known in Australia.

“The parade is truly one of the most amazing events you’ll find in Australia today,” Mardi Gras chair David Imrie told reporters in Sydney.

“It’s spectacular, it’s funny, it’s topical, it’s an x-ray of our culture, our mood and what’s on our minds.”

With the approaching autumn season coming about the “Land of Down Under”, I would suspect all of those Drag Queens would be packing a lot of fur underneath those sequined costumes.

Mr. Imrie continues:

“Mardi Gras is the biggest celebration of homosexuality in the world and aims to promote not just the tolerance but the acceptance of the gay community in the wider community,” he said.

FruitFly 6Hrmm… I’m having my doubts that Sydney has the largest gay pride festivals on the planet. I can think of a half dozen cities that would give Sydney’s 300,000+ Party-Bashers a run for their money in Popularity Contests.  Cities including; Amsterdam, London , NYC, Chicago, Minneapolis-St Paul, Atlanta… And that’s just a short-list. But, since we’re genetically programmed to love Austalians, their country and that wicked accent of theirs – we’ll let them have the bragging rights for now. But, trust me – we’ll be keeping detailed attention to any other bragging rights they’re not entitled to in the future!

Letterman: Limbaugh is a Bonehead

Letterman’s no dummy. He’s hoping Limbaugh rakes him over the coals for the remark and he’ll get his own ratings boost. I don’t know why Letterman doesn’t do better by simply roasting Limbaugh for the douche he really has become. It would be a Ratings Barnstormer.

Notice Katie Couric cringe… She’s such a right-wing tool-job. She’s terrified Limbaugh will think she’s no longer one of his minions and she’ll be damned to doing good deeds for poor children for all of eternity.

…and her exit statement: “So much for my interview with Rush!” Phhhhphp.. She’s complaining because she hasn’t been able to wiggle her way inside Limbaugh’s giant-sized underpants for over six months now!
