My Sunday column offers my own list of the best children's books ever, as an inducement to summer reading - and summer reading aloud. If I had had a bit more space, I would have offered a couple more: Winnie the Pooh (the chapter of Piglet trapped in the flood is my favorite); the A [...]

    • For July 4, Fix the Jefferson Memorial! July 4, 2009
For July 4, here's a suggestion for a teensy-weensy bit of stimulus money: Correct the misquotations in the Jefferson Memorial. My eighth-grade teacher, Mr. Conover, made us all memorize a chunk of the Declaration of Independence, so I was horrified when - years later - I visited the Jefferson Memorial and saw the Declaration carved on [...]

Anybody know what on earth is happening in Liberia? My Thursday column was inspired by watching three things: First, Congress vastly overblow the risk that Guantanamo detainees would cause problems if transferred to penitentiaries on American soil; Second, the vast underestimate of the costs of allowing our dysfunctional health system to stagger on uncorrected; Third, the underestimate of the risks of carbon […]

Hillary Clinton on SNL with Wilco: The Laughs are on Hillary

Posted on March 1, 2008 by fruitfly

I think this is pretty damned funny.

Clinton’s Surprise SNL Appearance

By Adam Nagourney

When the Clinton campaign plane took off from Texas this afternoon, one person was missing: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Where was she?

Mrs. Clinton hopped another plane bound for New York will she will appear later tonight on Saturday night Live, much the way Senator Barack Obama of Illinois did last year. It’s a surprise walk-on, and comes as Mrs. Clinton is finding new places to take her campaign appeal (She is appearing on Comedy Central last week).

But they always leave the best part in the last paragraph:

In what is perhaps not the greatest bit of show business timing, Mrs. Clinton will be sharing the Saturday Night Live bill with Wilco, the popular alt-country Chicago band which has become one of the biggest boosters of – you guessed it, Mr. Obama. (The Obama stickers could be spotted on the band’s gear when it showed up for a two-night stand at 9:30, the Washington music club this week.)

How easy can I find a picture of Barack Obama hugging a Wilco band member?

phphphphphph….

Wilco Obama

“Jesus Christ our president…” Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy sang in a Woody Guthrie song written before Obama’s candidacy.

But from the enhusiastic cheering for the man Tweedy introduced as “the next president of the United States,” it might have seemed like it was written for Obama.

FruitFlyNice job Hillary: When you’re desperate, look dumber!
